Helianthus is a genus comprising about 70 species of annual and perennial flowering plants commonly known as sunflowers.
They are native to North & Central America but can now been found growing all over the world.
The name sunflower comes from the Greek word helios which translates as "sun" and anthos which translates as "flower."

Sunflowers typically grow in the summer until early fall but are best found in England in June, July and August.
The sunflower is the National Flower of Ukraine, they have grown them since the 18th Century.
In addition to being beautiful blooms to buy, sunflowers have a lot of other common uses. Sunflower seeds are used in many recipes, as well as being crushed and made into sunflower oil. The yellow sunflowers are also used as a natural dye which comes off their petals.
Sunflowers are unique as although they look like one large flower, they are actually made up of thousands of tiny flowers that make up one large fake flower.
In addition to being extremely useful flowers, they also help with environmental issues as they have an amazing ability to absorb toxins, including radiation.
