Nikki made the journey to Puerto Rico this week to join in the initiative helping to reduce the worsening stray dog population on the island. With over half a million stray dogs in Puerto Rico, the location has heart-breakingly been branded ‘dead dog island’. With little government intervention the inhabitants of Puerto Rico are still yet to find a humane resolve for this harrowing situation.
Taking action, Nikki set off with close friend and talented photographer Aiden O’neil, on behalf of the Wild at Heart foundation, to join the inspirational Neva, who is currently living in Puerto Rico working tirelessly to make a difference. Neva works on rescuing and re-homing stray dogs as well as spaying and neutering to prevent the birth of thousands of strays.
Collaborating with Humane Society Puerto Rico the Wild at Heart Foundation have launched their own spaying campaign in Puerto Rico with the goal of neutering 100 dogs during their stay. The foundation are asking for donations to help raise funds for medical equipment, after-care, pop-up clinics and vets expenses.
It costs just £25.00 per dog and this could prevent the births of hundreds of thousands of dogs, condemned with a destitute life on the streets.
We’ll be hearing more from Nikki about the campaign when she returns. Stay tuned.
